GIFTED AND TALENTED

The Gifted and Talented program at Graham ISD identifies and serves students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth. Students qualify for the Gifted and Talented program based upon quantitative and qualitative data as well as input from school personnel and family members.

The goals of the gifted program are to:

   1.  Develop the students' capacities to become self-directed learners, to be confident in their ability to research and process information, and to create and communicate their findings.   Students are expected to create and present advanced-level products or performances as well as products and performances of professional quality at the high school exit level.

   2.  Enhance and refine the abstract and complex thinking and reasoning of identified students through more sophisticated creative and critical thinking activities as they reflect and refine their own thinking processes.

   3.  Provide students with multiple opportunities to participate in learning experiences using advanced content within the four core areas.   Content in these areas are defensibly differentiated in depth, complexity and range through modification of content and/or process and/or product.  Students will work independently, with groups of other gifted students, and with groups of non-gifted peers.

At Graham ISD, elementary gifted students have the opportunity to participate in the traditional pull-out model of instruction as well as the Challenge Lab program initiated at grades 1, 2, and 3. At 4th and 5th grades the students take part in Texas Performance Standards Projects (TPSP).  The goal of the TPSP is for students to create work that reflects the professional quality that the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students requires. At the secondary level, gifted students may enroll in advanced coursework such as dual credit or Advanced Placement.  Currently, Graham High School offers two tracks of specialized instruction.  The STEM Academy focuses are enhanced learning of math and science.  The Academy of Liberal Arts has an emphasis on languages and history.
