Students in Graham ISD whose first language is something other than English are provided with the opportunity to participate in the Bilingual program or English as a Second Language program offered at all of GISD campuses. Participation in the program is dependent upon meeting qualification factors including but not limited to designated language spoken at home, testing as limited English proficient on the language proficiency testing, and approval granted by the parent to be placed in the program.
According to state and federal law, school districts must offer a bilingual program if the district has more than twenty students in any one grade level in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade whose first language is something other than English. At this time, Graham ISD meet that mandate by providing certified Bilingual educators in those grades. Graham ISD also offers English as a Second Language to support continued English acquistion for students not participating in the elementary Bilingual program as well as all secondary students.
The goals of both programs are to provide an affective, linguistic, and cognitive environment for students learning the English language and assist these students in their understanding and acquisition of English in casual as well as academic settings.
